The Warehouse

Mystix practiced in a studio in Miami about twice a week. The problem was that we didn't have much money, therefore it was getting too expensive for us to continue to pay for practice time in a studio. Deniz came up with an idea to rent a warehouse, where you could live in the space, pay rent, and then we could practice as much as we want. Deniz found a warehouse near Miami Springs, and negotiated the whole deal. We all chipped in for the rent; however it was Laurence, Leo and Deniz who actually would move into the warehouse to live.

There was a lot of work to do in order to make the warehouse both livable and ready for practicing, performing and recording music. It was a pretty good size space up to 2,000 square feet. In one corner, we made a living room. We put down a big piece of carpet, sofa and chairs in a square shape with a TV on the fourth side. You would see this off to the left when you walked into the front door of the warehouse. The warehouse was on the second floor and you had to walk up some very narrow stairs to get to the front door. On the opposite end of the entire warehouse, is where Deniz, Laurence and Leo put their queen size water beds. Water beds were very popular at that time. I actually owned and used different water beds through out the years from the 1980's until 1996 when I purchased my first family home. In any case, the guys decided not to use headboards or even water bed stands. The beds just sat flat-low on the floor with shiny silk sheets or in one case a brown and white tiger striped sheet. Okay I have outlined the living area and the open bedroom.

As I stated earlier, there was a lot to do to make the warehouse ready. For starters, there was limited plumbing. Yes there was a bathroom with a toilet; however it was a warehouse so therefore it was very unlikely there would be a shower. Like I said we didn't have much money; so Deniz in his determination said that he would build the shower himself. I lived in a small studio apartment in Miami Springs at the time, which was about a five minute drive from the warehouse. I let the guys shower at my place for a while. I would say the project took about a month; but Deniz did finally completed the installation of the shower. I have to admit he did a great job. No there was never a kitchen; so as you can imagine all the food for a group of single young guys was all take-out fast food except on the occasion when we ate at someone's parent's house or could afford to go out to a restaurant, which usually ended up to be a Denny's down the street.

Now for setting up the warehouse for music: The acoustics had to be right and certain places had to be sound proofed. If you don't have much money, then a good method of getting the right sound is to use egg cartons and put them up on the walls. This was very effective. Wiring up all the equipment for sound lights etc. was next. Since we now had a place to store musical equipment, we could go out and purchase more equipment to work with. Again because of our limited funds, we would buy used equipment or negotiated some shady deals to get our hands on certain equipment that we needed.

Deniz took full advantage of the situation. The guys practiced a lot; wrote songs together; and worked repeatedly on perfecting the music. There was so much more progress in the warehouse than the two practice sessions a week we were doing in the studio. Of course, the guys bonded more, but some times the opposite effect happens when you are living with people. There were disagreements, and in some cases they were severe; however the strength of the friendships always prevailed. It was Deniz and I who kept everyone focused; of course Deniz was the motivator. The warehouse had its regular group of friends that would hang out, girlfriends, potential wannabe girl friends, party friends etc. They would hang out and hear the band practice. I would say that if the band wasn't practicing, then partying usually did not occur at the warehouse but at other locations such as clubs, houses, apartments, and events etc.

I don't believe the warehouse survived an entire year. Though I can't recall the time frame; but if I remember correctly, the warehouse was disbanded around the same time the group broke up. The warehouse was fun and productive. We could spend quality time working on the music and as a result there were great memories, creative music and lasting friendships.

The Story Behind the Love Song "Oh Tammy" - Lyrics

I remember being in an apartment near Miami Beach on a Saturday night. Some of the members of Mystix were there: Lawrence “Lead Guitar”, Leo “Drummer” and Deniz “Lead Singer”. The evening started at 6pm and ended early morning in some night club. There were people going in and out of the apartment that night; guys and girls between the ages of 18 & 24. Deniz knew most of the people; I knew some of them; and quickly made friends with some of the one's I just met for the first time. A few partaken in consuming alcohol or smoking a little weed. Meaning that some time during the evening you would see someone light up a joint. We attended a lot of parties during those years; however they were very much under control. There were no drinking binges or people excessively high on drugs. It was more of a social gathering, talking, laughing, listening to music and in many cases trying to hook up. Not in today's definition of sexual exploits; but in the dating sense, whereby a new physical encounter was rare and the highlight story of the next day. If anyone was too inebriated who was in our inner-family-circle, then I was the designated driver literally and figuratively the voice of reason.

Lawrence had a new girlfriend, “Tammy”. The one question of how Laurence and Tammy met I cannot recall. Before that evening I had briefly met Tammy once; however Lawrence never stopped talking about her. Obviously he was big time in love. Lawrence is not in the photo on this blog. I am still looking in my archives to find a picture of Lawrence to post. Laurence was thin, about 5' 7”, tanned, long curly black hair, approximately 20 years, had a very young looking face, Spanish descent and soft spoken. As you can hear on the songs available on this blog, Lawrence was a very talented guitar player and creative in writing original music. I barely recall Tammy because it has been 20 years; what I do remember was that Tammy was shorter than Laurence, thin, pretty and a brunette with medium length curly hair.

Lawrence usually wrote the music and not the lyrics. As a result of being crazy about Tammy, he wrote a love song for her. Early that evening, Laurence sang the first verse of the song and two lines of the second verse A-Cappella. I captured it on a cassette recorder. Deniz quickly thought of a chorus. Laurence picked up his guitar; and Deniz picked up the microphone as I proceeded to record the two performing the first part of the song. I believe Leo sang backup on the chorus. Unfortunately the relationship between Lawrence and Tammy was short-lived; so the song was never completed. Lawrence of course was heartbroken, but eventually moved on. In addition to the back story of the song, it's interesting to hear the process of creating the lyrics and the music by listening to these two very short recordings of “Oh Tammy”.

Incomplete Lyrics of “Oh Tammy”

You know I care

It's up to you now Tammy

There is room in the sky for one more star

I worked so hard to come to this Oh Tammy

And I 'm glad that you've come with me this far

Because I know I love you Tammy

Cause I know without you I'm alone

Because I know I love you Tammy

So take some time to think about us Baby

Take my hand and we'll make it to the top

Baby I'm Crazy - Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to the first song, "Baby I'm Crazy". This song was recorded in a practice session in Miami, Florida. The vocals are a little distorted. You can follow by reading the lyrics below. After listening to the song a couple of times, it can grow on you.

Listen
Mystix - Baby I'm Crazy

Baby I'm Crazy
I think of you
To call me and tell me we're through
I think of you
So why don't you tell me we're through

You lie you cheat on me
We were never meant to be girl
You lie you cheat on me
Some day you will see baby
So lay your keys on the table
We couldn't make it if you were able
To stay home once in a while
I'm sorry that I'm not your style

Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love is hard to find
Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love is hard to find

I looked at the big town a fool girl
Maybe you're used to me
I'm sorry things didn't work out
You're going to want to leave baby

So lay your keys on the table
We couldn't make it if you were able
To stay home once in a while
I'm sorry that I'm not your style

Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love that we find
Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love is hard to find

You lie you cheat on me
We were never meant to be baby
You lie you cheat on me
Some day you will see girl
So lay your keys on the table
We couldn't make it if you were able
To stay home once in a while
I'm sorry that I'm not your style
Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love is hard to find
Baby I'm crazy
Getting you off my mind
Maybe I'm crazy
True love is hard to find

The Music

The years are 1987 through 1988. Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and Glam "Hair" Bands were in high gear. Some of the more popular groups of the time were Bon Jovi, White Snake, Def Lepard and Guns'N Roses just to name a few. In Miami, Florida a group of guys with regular day jobs between the ages of 18-24 got together to create music and fun experiences enjoying life as friends. More details to come later.

The music on this blog are the songs created from those friendships. There were no high tech electronics nor digital recording studios to work from. The old fashion drum set, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and raw vocals were all that we had. The lead singer on all of the songs is Deniz Kose in his first years performing. The quality of the recordings available on this blog to play and/or download are not very high. Most of the songs are with the group Mystix recorded with a cheap cassette recorder in the studio during rehearsal. All the songs lyrics and music are original and written collaboratively by the members of the band. There are 6 of the 22 original songs which were actually professionally recorded in the studio. Those 6 songs were transferred from old reel-to-reel tape to cassette, and then captured as an MP3. The six recordings had different musicians with Deniz Kose as the lead singer. Two of the six songs' lyrics were authored by Kenny Leibow. Unfortunately Mystix did not have suffiicient funds nor was together long enough to record their hook catching sound in a professional studio. I went through hundreds of hours of tapes to find the recordings with the most complete songs performed in live practice sessions. Also included are the six professionally recorded studio songs by Deniz Kose.

Song Lyrics and more information about the band members and their experiences coming soon. Please enjoy listening to the music online, link to, or download the songs to your MP3 Player i.e. IPod and vote on the songs that you like. With many thanks, Kenny Leibow
