Greatest Rock Guitar Riffs

When you are a teenager and first learn to play electric guitar, Iron Man by Black Sabbath or Day Tripper by the Beatles are some of the easier and more popular Riffs to play. A rock guitar riff is what makes the song catchy, not only to make you want to hear it over and over again, but entices you to act it out verbally or like air guitar etc. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and Keith Richards have created some of the best known guitar riffs of all time.

Below is the top 100 greatest rock guitar riffs from www.digitaldreamdoor.com. I frequently quote their lists because they are pretty accurate compared to other published lists. Though we all don't exactly agree about the songs or order on the list. For example, I don't see Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" or Pat Benatar's "Hit Me with Your Best Shot". My number 1 riff is based on being the very first in rock 'n roll, which is "Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry". The list below is not about technique or level of difficulty it is all about popularity. Please comment on your favorite rock guitar riffs. - Kenny Leibow

Technical Definition of a Riff
In music, a riff is an ostinato figure: a repeated chord progression, pattern, refrain or melodic figure, often played by the rhythm section instruments orsolo instrument, that forms the basis or accompaniment of a musical composition. Though they are most often found in rock music, Latin, funk and jazz, classical music is also sometimes based on a simple riff, such asRavel's Boléro. Riffs can be as simple as a tenor saxophone honking a simple, catchy rhythmic figure, or as complex as the riff-based variations in the head arrangements played by the Count Basie Orchestra.

Thanksgiving 1988 - Eric Clapton

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family. I spent Thanksgiving 1988 in a Denny's with Deniz Kose. For the both of us, this was the last Thanksgiving before we became part of new families. I was having a long distance relationship with a beautiful doctor in her mid 20's from Costa Rica. In December 1988, she came to live with me in Florida; then Deyanira and I got married 4 months later in April 1989 on the exact day, coincidentally, that Jon Bon Jovi married his high school sweetheart. We are still married today 19 years later and we have two beautiful children (Kenny and Candice).

Deniz at the time was dating Stacy who was a couple of years younger. After dating a short time, the relationship started to have problems; and they split up for a few weeks. Deniz, Stacy and me were all good friends; and I could tell at the time that they really loved each other. After a little coaxing, they got back together. The next year they had a beautiful baby girl, Heather. Following the birth of the baby, Deniz and Stacy's relationship lasted only for a short time; however this beautiful baby girl has been an important part of both their lives all the years to follow.

I will always remember that Thanksgiving 1988 is when Deniz' and my life would change forever, which will always leave the four of us connected. The first photo on this blog you can see a picture of Deniz and Stacy with Deya and me in 1988.

In keeping with the music connection to this post, I added a video from one of the best concerts in 1988 "The Prince's Trust Rock Concert" at Royal Albert Hall. Please see this excellent video of Eric Clapton playing his infamous song "Layla" to a live royal audience . In addition to the video, see the lyrics below:

Lyrics "Layla" Eric Clapton
What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.

Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.

Chorus

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

Chorus

Chorus
